What the site is

Gelbooru is a free image board for anime-styled art and hentai, in English, and anyone can browse and search its archive of images and short videos without paying. Its title reads "Anime Art & Hentai Gallery - Free to Explore", and its terms put it plainly: "This is a free archive site." The About page calls it "a premier community contributed online platform for anime-styled multimedia", established in 2007, and the site's own description says it holds images themed on anime, manga and video games and "Contains explicit hentai content". Everything on it is posted by its users and organized by tags.

The free offer

The archive is the offer. The About page claims a vast archive of over 10 million unique images, videos and translations and "tens of thousands of unique tags", and it calls the tagging and search system the thing that sets the site apart. Each post is tagged with descriptive keywords, and a visitor combines tags to narrow a search, for example to one specific character. Those size figures are the site's own claims, as is its description of itself as "a cornerstone for anime enthusiasts worldwide" and a resource for "fans, creators, and researchers alike". The site's description elsewhere speaks of "millions of anime, manga, and video game themed images", and it names doujinshi and rule34 art among its subjects.

Browsing works through several doors. The header carries a post List, a Tags index, Pools, a Random button for a visitor with no particular target, a Featured page and Saved Searches. The home page itself carries only links to Browse, All Posts, Comments, Forum, Wiki and My Account, so the archive is meant to be searched rather than scrolled.

Posts are not only still images. The menus carry an Upload link and a separate video upload link (Upload WebM in one menu, Upload Video in the other), and the About page speaks of "images, videos, and translations", so short animated clips sit in the same tagged archive as the art. The site does not describe a player, quality settings or a download button.

The galleries side is the image board itself. The terms define the scope: Gelbooru is "an English-language gallery for Japanese-themed art", and anything not drawn by a Japanese artist "must be drawn in a Japanese style or feature Japanese characters/copyrights". Photographs of cosplayers, of figures, of JAV models and of prominent people in the industry are also accepted, so the board holds some photography beside the drawn and rendered work. Everything outside that scope is deleted unless the moderation team grants an exception for quality.

The community side is large for an image archive. Members comment on posts, write in a Wiki, talk in a Forum and can follow a Trac page, and a Live Chat link sits in the About page menu. The header also links a Discord and a Twitter account. The privacy text shows what members leave in public: uploaded posts, favorited posts, comments, forum posts and edits to the site can all be made public, so members keep favorites and edit the site's tag data.

An account is optional for looking. The My Account and Settings links hold the display preferences, which the privacy text says are stored in cookies, and the account options are where the ad setting described below is switched off.

Where free stops, and the rules

No page names a price, a subscription or a paid tier for viewing. The menus link Supporters and Redeem Code, an optional supporter route the site does not describe further, and nothing says a visitor needs it to browse.

The ad model is set out in the site's own notice: "We will show one popunder ad per half day. This can be disabled in your account options. The popunder will spawn as soon as you click on the page." The terms tie the free archive to its ads, asking visitors not to block or hide them because "This is a free archive site". The privacy text adds that its ad networks "may log other things that we are not fully aware of", such as browser headers and IP addresses. A third party that draws on the site's API or serves files from its servers may not show ads or run paywalls over that content.

The upload rules are long and specific. Uploads must be "of high quality", and the uploader confirms holding the rights to what is posted. Watermarks added by someone who is not the copyright owner, images copied off a screen (unless the work of compiling them earns an exception), visibly compressed images and motivator images are refused. Doujinshi, manga and light novels may not be uploaded, though "Comic strips are fine (4koma)!", and cover pages are no longer allowed. Paysite or paid content is barred outright. AI-generated or AI-assisted uploads must be tagged as such and must be indistinguishable from non-AI artwork, and a notice in the header links the operator's own statement on AI-generated art and invites members to discuss it. The terms also ban sexual depictions of minors and of animals, and grotesque material such as extreme mutilation.

On removal, the site "reserves the right to delete or modify your account, or any content you have posted", and the menus link a DMCA page for copyright claims. The terms bar minors from the site, limit use to personal use, forbid automated scraping except by public search engines, and present the site "AS IS". The site keeps users' IP and email addresses from anyone but staff. The terms add, with unusual frankness, that "The operators of the site are not entirely held to these terms." It names no operator or company, and the footer says it runs on its own board software, Gelbooru Beta.

Who it suits

Gelbooru suits a visitor who knows what they are looking for and wants to find it by tag: a character from one game, a single artist's style, a pairing or a costume. The tag index, the wiki and pools make it strong for that kind of targeted browsing, and members who want to upload, comment or edit tags get a working community with clear written rules.

It suits less well a visitor who wants a video library, since the videos sit among the images of an art archive rather than in a section of their own. The popunder ad arrives on the first click of each half day unless an account turns it off, and the Supporters route is not explained anywhere. The archive is image-first and tag-first, so someone who wants an edited front page to scroll will find little of that. The terms also warn that some content "does not appeal to you or you feel is morally wrong", and the site leaves it to tags to steer around it.

Its strength is the depth of its tagging: a very large tagged archive of anime-styled art, free to search with no paywall in front of it.
